The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It's more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese), director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director's cut, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film's release in 1970. Eight previously edited segments were restored in 1994, and the original director's cut of Woodstock is now the version most commonly available on videotape and DVD. The film deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Documentary, and it's still a stunning achievement. Abundant footage taken among the massive crowd ("half a million strong") expresses the human heart of the event, from skinny-dipping hippies to accidental overdoses, to unpredictable weather, midconcert childbirth, and the thoughtful (or just plain rambling) reflections of the festive participants. Then, of course, there is the music--a nonstop parade of rock & roll from the greatest performers of the period, including Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Canned Heat, The Who, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Ten Years After, Sly & The Family Stone, Santana, and many more. Watching this ambitious film, as the saying goes, is the next best thing to being there--it's a time-travel journey to that once-in-a-lifetime event. --Jeff ShannonProduct Description1969 was a year unlike any other. This book explains definitively and for the first time why the festival was named Woodstock, and why it continues to be so closely associated with the town, even though the concert actually took place in Bethel, New York. The project began as panel discussion among townspeople knowledgeable about the music scene in the late sixties. It was held on August 9, 2008, at the Colony Cafe in Woodstock (and followed by a contemporary "Sound-Out"). Panelists included Michael Lang, a Woodstock resident and legendary 1969 Woodstock Festival promoter; Jean Young, a co-author with Lang of Woodstock Festival Remembered; Bill West, active in local government since the 1960s; Jeremy Wilber, former Town Supervisor and bartender during the sixties at the Sled Hill Cafe; and Paul McMahon, a local music icon. During the course of the wide-ranging conversation the audience learned how Lang and his partners developed the concept for the world-renowned Woodstock Music and Art Fair, and how their thinking was shaped by Woodstock's legacy of art and music festivals. A richly illustrated panel discussion transcript comprises the first part of the book. It is followed by a roots of Woodstock photo essay that highlights such Woodstock writers and performers as Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Allen Ginsberg, Pete Seeger, and Richie Havens. In addition it chronicles the Arts and Crafts origins of the town from the 1800s, and highlights the town's hallowed tradition of weekend-long musical concerts. These began in the early 1900s with Woodstock's Maverick festivals, and stretched up through the countercultural Sound-Outs of the 1960s. Bob Fass, a Woodstock Sound-Out emcee and host of WBAI's Radio Unnameable for close to fifty years has contributed a brilliant and evocative foreword to the book. Also included are a compendium of important Woodstock players, a map of historic 1960s locations in the Woodstock area, and 115 images many of them rare, vintage photos of the Woodstock music and art scenes.

Everyone from 'hip' doctors, to Army helicpter pilots to vacationing nuns pitched in to make the hippie festival a happy rather than horrific occasion. Gives the inside story of everyting from the tragic deaths of 2 fair-goers to the mysterious birth of the 'Woodstock Baby', to the Hog Farmers using talk-therapy on the most spaced-out of trippers.

Held over three days in August 1969, the Woodstock festival was, for many, the culmination of the counterculture movement. More than 35 years later, the word Woodstock conjures notions of Edenic peace and love, a landmark moment from the Sixties that is both unforgettable and inimitable. In this authoritative reference guide—the first of its kind—historian James Perone presents encyclopedic entries on all the performers who played Woodstock, including Joan Baez, Country Joe and the Fish, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Ten Years After, The Who—even Sha Na Na—as well as the organizers and decision makers behind the event, from Michael Langer, governor Nelson Rockefeller, documentary film director Michael Wadleigh, and even the Concerned Citizens Committee who prevented Woodstock Ventures from holding the fair at the original site in Walkill, New York. Historical chapters trace the history of the festival from its inception and planning to its aftermath—including the infamous Altamont concert in December 1969 and the ill-fated 30th anniversary concert held in Rome, New York, in 1999. A wealth of historic photos plus an appendix of recordings and a subject index round out this wonderful reference for any scholar of 20th-century American music, history, and culture.
In 1969, the legendary 3-day music festival defined a generation and gave us unforgettable musical performances. Included in this powerful medley are: Soul Sacrifice (Santana), Proud Mary (Creedence Clearwater Revival, Pinball Wizard (The Who), Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane), With a Little Help from My Friends (Joe Cocker), Suite: Judy Blues Eyes (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), and Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix). This is just like being there - without the mud!
In 1969, Greg Walter was hired by Woodstock Ventures to help create a music festival to be held on a farm in upstate NY. Greg built the stages, worked on the Art Crew, and while helping to make history, took a lot of pictures. Photographs he developed, then put into a shoebox under his parent's bed, where they lay forgotten for nearly 40 years. Shortly after Woodstock ended, a warrant was issued for his arrest as a Viet Nam War Protester and Greg was forced to flee to Canada for sanctuary. After President Jimmy Carter's amnesty in 1977, Greg returned to the country he loved, and while taking care of a parent in 2005, he discovered the photographs, still under the bed. It was a magic moment when he opened the box and saw those photos again--pictures of Woodstock that have never been seen before by anyone--and believing that others would feel the same way about them, felt compelled to write a narrative to share these photos, and his amazing experience with the world.
(2-CD set) Kathy McCord's lone 1969 for CTI Records has long been a cult folk-psych classic, rated highly by all those who enjoy artists such as Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan and their ilk. Its cult status has been boosted by its incredible scarcity - a true holy grail in collector circles, if ever there was one.Aside from its original vinyl issue, the only other time it's been available in 40 years was via an almost impossible to find, limited Japanese CD that is, if anything, harder to find than the original album now.Ace is delighted, via Big Beat, to reinstate this wonderful music to catalogue and to bring it to what is potentially its biggest-ever audience. The 2CD set also includes both sides of a rare, pre-CTI single and nearly 20 demos that Kathy cut in Woodstock during the 1970s. On these she is backed by luminaries that include the Fabulous Rhinestones, Paul Butterfield and members of the Band. All are from Kathy's own collection, and none has ever been released commercially prior to this CD.Assembled with the full co-operation of Kathy and her brother, the equally-celebrated Billy Vera (both of whom contribute sleeve notes), New Jersey To Woodstock is a musical journey very much worth taking.
Woodstock was billed as "Three Days of Peace and Music" and this one ticket was all you needed to see Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Santana, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, Country Joe, Joan Baez, Richie Havens, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Band as well as too many other artists to list. Of course, the fences eventually came down as 500,000 people showed up and, well, a free concert ensued. For much of the country, the events that took place on Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, NY, the weekend of Aug. 15-17, 1969, signaled a change. The festival wasn't just about the music; But, one look at the entire set lists does remind us just how much great music was played. For example, The Who played a 25-song set.Our Woodstock Mini-Mega Ticket celebrates the peace, the music, and the significant cultural impact the event had on society. Plus, if you were there, this Mini-Mega Ticket can help you hold on to all those memories a little bit tighter.Mini-Mega Tickets are made from authentic tickets that are enlarged 200% and printed directly on 1/4-inch white board.Overall Size: 4.750 (W) x 14.000 (H) x 0.250 (D).
A colorful, cloisonne-style windcatcher has 4 icons, one for each season. This chime is tuned to the final chord from the 2nd movement of Concerto #3 (Autumn) of Antonio Vivaldi?s The Four Seasons. This series of concertos written for violin, strings and basso continuo was first published in 1725. This popular piece has been used in many movies and is a popular wedding processional. One of Vivaldi?s best known works, The Four Seasons is one of the most well known examples of music from the Baroque period. Vivaldi wrote individual sonnets to go with each of the four concertos, with each sonnet consisting of three parts that match the fast - slow - fast of the three concerto?s movements. Here?s part of the sonnet for Autumn: Celebrates the peasant, with songs and dances, The pleasure of a bountiful harvest. Everyone is made to forget their cares and to sing and dance By the air which is tempered with pleasure And by the season that invites so many, many Out of their sweetest slumber to fine enjoyment.
Tuned to the joyous notes of Hava Nagila, our Shalom Chime is a celebration of peace. The Hebrew word Shalom means peace and is used as a greeting or farewell. This chime is tuned to the notes of the uplifting melody of the song cantor and musicologist Abraham Zevi Idelsohn called Hava Nagila. Inspired by Psalm 118, Idelsohn put words to this old Hasidic melody that Eastern European immigrants brought to Jerusalem. The premier performance of this song was given at a special concert in 1918. Nearly overnight, Hava Nagila spread throughout the countryside. The song achieved international popularity in the 1950s and 60s when it was recorded by several musical artists including Neil Diamond and Harry Belafonte. With its uplifting melody and joyous lyrics, Hava Nagila remains a staple of Jewish weddings and celebrations to this day. Let us rejoice, let us rejoice, Let us rejoice and be glad! Let us sing, let us sing, Let us sing and be glad! Awake, awake brothers, Awake brothers with a joyful heart! Cherry finish ash wood, 6 silver anodized aluminum tubes, and silkscreened windcatcher. Woodstock Chimes are the original, musically-tuned, high-quality windchimes known worldwide for their superior sound. When listening to a Woodstock Chime, you hear a fine musical instrument played by the wind. More than 30 years ago, the first Woodstock Chime was created by founder and owner Garry Kvistad from an aluminum lawn chair he found in a landfill. As a professional musician and instrument designer, he was fascinated by the Scales of Olympos, a 7th century pentatonic scale that can't be played on a modern piano. Garry had the idea to cut and tune the lawn chair tubes to the exact frequency of the ancient scale. The resulting Chimes of Olympos was the first Woodstock Chime and is still one of our bestselling windchimes. Garry and his wife Diane founded Woodstock Percussion, Inc. in 1979 and it remains a family-owned business in New York's Hudson Valley.
The third day of the historic "Three Days Of Peace & Love," otherwise known as The Woodstock Festival, August 15 to 17, 1969, found Joe Cocker and The Grease Band greeting the new day and several hundred thousand attendees with nothing less than a rousing, electric set. The singer performed songs mostly from his first two albums (With A Little Help From My Friends and, due 3 months hence, Joe Cocker!). And, of course, the incredible impact vocally and visually of Joe's performance that bright Sunday afternoon of the debut LP's Lennon-McCartney title song became his first international calling card. However, the other ten songs of the singer's legendary show that day, including covers of Bob Dylan, Ashford & Simpson, Ray Charles, and a pair of originals, remained unreleased until now, in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock. A wrong rectified.

As folk classics Puff, The Magic Dragon and Blowin' in the Wind meet Bethany & Rufus a blend of contemporary groove, roots and world music, Peter is pulled into the vitality of both generations' music, and comes full circle to celebrate his dream, now continued and transformed by the next generation."

When The Band's drummer Levon Helm set up a Woodstock-based recording studio and production company in 1975, his first client was the legendary bluesman Muddy Waters. Surrounding him with familiar sidemen Pinetop Perkins and Bob Margolin, plus such simpatico rock and blues stalwarts as The Band's Garth Hudson on accordion and organ, Paul Butterfield on harp, and Howard Johnson on saxophone, the 60-year-old Waters responded with the smoothest and most supple singing of his career. These two sessions are as delightful as any in his long association with Chess Records, and they signify his last album with that label. Among this Grammy Award-winning work's highlights are Muddy's original composition "Born with Nothing," featuring his stinging signature slide; his joyful R&B covers of "Let the Good Times Roll," Wilbert Harrison's "Kansas City," and Louis Jordan's "Caledonia," this last graced by a looping Hudson accordion solo; and the previously unreleased bonus track, "Fox Squirrel". --Alan Greenberg

The festival wasn't just about the music; But, one look at the entire set lists does remind us just how much great music was played. For example, The Who played a 25-song set.Our Woodstock Mega Ticket celebrates the peace, the music, and the significant cultural impact the event had on society. Plus, if you were there, this Mega Ticket can help you hold on to all those memories a little bit tighter.
